You brush your teeth for at least two minutes a day, floss, eat gum with Xylitol, and maintain a healthy diet, but you still may be doing things that easily outwork such efforts and compromise your teeth. Oftentimes, it’s the little things that people unknowingly do that cause the biggest damage. If your teeth do not feel and look as healthy as they should, you may be guilty of some habits that are simply terrible for your teeth.
According to a dentist Brooklyn residents rely on, an immediate change of habits is necessary because many of the damages that these habits cause are permanent. So, what are the worst habits for the teeth that most people have? The dentist has rounded up 10.
- Brushing your teeth too vigorously. This may effectively get rid of food particles and prevent plaque, but brushing too hard may damage your teeth’s surface. A lot of people who tend to do this end up with scratches on their teeth that actually turn into cavities.
- Chewing on ice. There are people who tend to chew and bite down on ice instead of snacking on real food; they think it’s better for weight maintenance because it’s just hardened water, but it’s completely damaging for teeth. It irritates the soft tissue inside the teeth, and sensitivity and ache may follow. Plus, those with weak teeth are at high risk of chipping them because of this habit.
- Teeth grinding. The most nervous people tend to grind their teeth and many also do so when they’re sleeping. This wears down the teeth’s enamel, creating unevenness and sensitivity.
- Snacking on soft candy like gummy bears and worms. These are loaded with sugar and acids that lead to cavities.
- Consuming too many carbonated drinks. They may be refreshing, but these drinks are heavy on acids that corrode the teeth and cause discoloration.
- Brushing right after eating fruits. The acids in fruit make the teeth very sensitive and brushing can aggravate that.
- Chewing on pens and pencils. Most people say it helps them think, but this is awful (for the incisors, in particular). Likewise, pens and pencils have a lot of bacteria that may compromise your oral health.
- Drinking coffee too much. Everybody needs a cup of joe to energize them throughout the day, but it’s one of the leading causes of tooth discoloration.
- Smoking. This not only causes bad breath but tooth discoloration as well.
- Drinking wine to cap off the night. Whether it’s red or white, the fact remains that wine has a lot of acids that weaken the tooth’s enamel, and the alcohol content has a dehydrating effect. Red wine also leaves ugly stains on the teeth’s surface.
